It has been known for some time that the hypothalamus is critically involved in mood, but it is not fully understood how. In the new study, researchers from the University of California in Los Angeles and the University of Maryland collected more than 100 depressed people with a history of depression and, for comparison, a group of healthy people. They then measured several markers of brain function in the hypothalamus, including response to hormones. Of the depressed patients, 30% were able to become more responsive to the hormone androgen, and some were able to decrease their response to the hormone. Only 10% of the healthy people were able to respond to androgen, which the researchers said suggested that the hypothalamus was not fully functioning in the depressed patients.
